Shōta Soos shuts out Fathers, Newts sweep

Updated: May 28

NEW CARLISLE - Matt Soos continued his early season campaign for National League Cy Young on Sunday afternoon, and the New Carlisle Newts (7-2) swept the Great Lakes Godfathers, 11-0, 4-0, 3-0, to open up Migley Field for the season.

“Shōta” Soos (5-1) pitched all 18 innings for New Carlisle, scattering seven hits throughout the series. The three-game shutout dropped his earned run average to 0.34 through 35 innings pitched.

With the wind howling in at the Friendly Confines, Soos did not need much run support - but he certainly got it in the series opener. Leadoff hitter Noah Shail homered in his first four at bats, including two in the first inning. Sean Touhey added a three-run bomb in the first, and the Newts were in the driver’s seat the rest of the afternoon.

Tyler Shupert and Scott Soos also found a way to cut through the wind for home runs in game one. Each of them also added RBI knocks in the fifth inning.

After the opener, the series was more tightly contested. The Newts again got on top in the first, with Shupert driving in JP Kehoe on an RBI single. Shupert and Scott Soos would score later in the inning on a base hit by Garrett Curless.

New Carlisle didn’t score again until the fifth, when Kehoe blasted his first homer of the year to give the game its final tally of 4-0.

In the series finale, Soos allowed a one-out, first-inning single to Whitt Huffer before retiring the next 17 batters in order.

As they did in the first two games, the Newts scored in the opening frame. This time via a Curless groundout that plated Kehoe.

In the second inning, Shail played longball again, and Curless drove in Kehoe on a double to make it 3-0.

Sunday marked the first victorious home opener for the Newts since 2020, when they swept Elkhart at Migley Field. New Carlisle will hope the confines remain friendly to the home team, as their next nine games will be played at the corner of Bray and Dunn.

Next up, New Carlisle will host the Granger Panthers (7-2) on Sunday, May 26. First pitch is slated for 1:20pm ET.
