Newts swept out east, now head west

Updated: Jul 1

BRISTOL - It was a de facto rematch of the 2023 World Series as the New Carlisle Newts made the long trek to Elkhart County to face the BFAM on Sunday afternoon. Anyone expecting a thrilling continuation of last year's seven-game title tilt would have been severely disappointed with this direct-to-video quality sequel.

Elkhart swept New Carlisle, 2-1, 9-1, 3-1.

Tyler Shupert homered for the Newts in the opening inning of the series, and that was the most competitive the visitors were all afternoon. BFAM answered with a run in the bottom of the first and pulled ahead with another in the fourth.

Aidan Cotter took the loss on the mound for each of the first two contests. Cotter accounted for the Newts only run in the second game with an RBI triple.

In the finale, Kody Webb made his Newts pitching debut. Elkhart welcomed him to the mound with back-to-back-to-back homers by the first three batters he faced.

Webb settled down and allowed nothing else the rest of the way. He also got one of those runs back at the plate with a solo shot of his own, but the Newts could not muster up any more offense.

New Carlisle has dropped five of their last six to fall to 13-8 on the year. The Newts will travel to Union Mills next Sunday to face the Mill Pond Pandas in another interleague matchup.
